ESP32 Board Manager: Missing Boards, Fixes
The ESP32 does not show up in Board Manager, the list is empty, or the wrong board got selected. The five-minute fixes, in order.
Can’t Find ESP32 in Board Manager?
Then the package never got installed — Board Manager only lists packages available from the URLs you configured. Check File → Preferences → Additional Boards Manager URLs; it must contain https://dl.espressif.com/dl/package_esp32_index.json. Empty field: paste it and reopen Board Manager. URL present but search empty: the index download failed — retry, or use the manual zip install. I lost an afternoon to this once, and the cause was a stale package cache from an old install — deleting the cache under %LOCALAPPDATA%Arduino15 and reinstalling fixed it. Nine times out of ten, though, the missing URL is the whole story.
How to Install ESP32 Board in Arduino IDE?
Preferences → paste the Espressif JSON URL → Boards Manager → search esp32 → install “esp32 by Espressif Systems” — there are third-party lookalikes, take the Espressif one. Then restart the IDE — the board menu picks up packages on restart, the step almost every “still not there” report skipped.
How to Add ESP32 Board in Arduino IDE?
Adding a board is installing its package — same operation, different word. Already installed and the board is missing anyway? Uninstall from Boards Manager, restart, reinstall. The package is small; a five-minute reinstall beats an hour of hunting.
Which Board to Select for ESP32 in Arduino IDE?
For a generic ESP32 dev board — WROOM-32, WROOM-32D, DevKitC — select “ESP32 Dev Module.” The safe default: correct clock and flash handling for 4 MB boards. The S3, C3, and S2 chips have their own entries, and picking the wrong family compiles fine but fails at upload with a chip mismatch in the esptool output.
Why Is My ESP32 Not Showing Up in Arduino IDE?
Two different problems get called “not showing up,” with opposite fixes. Board missing under Tools → Board: package problem, see the install answers above. Board there but port list empty: driver or cable — CH340 and CP2102 chips need vendor drivers (Windows especially), and charge-only USB cables carry power but no data. Device Manager shows it? No → cable or driver. Yes but no Arduino port → wrong driver or a conflict. The port side is the one I see misdiagnosed most often — people reinstall the board package for what turns out to be a cable.
What Should I Select in Arduino for ESP32?
“ESP32 Dev Module” for standard boards; the exact variant for S3, C3, S2. Flash size, PSRAM, and partition scheme sit in the same menu; the defaults are right for most sketches. When in doubt, select ESP32 Dev Module and change nothing else.
Board Manager shows the package, but the install errors out?
Index download errors are network; extract errors are disk or antivirus. On Windows, AV sometimes quarantines the toolchain mid-extract — exclude the Arduino15 folder and retry. The flashing FAQ covers the same errors when they appear at upload time.
I installed a second package and now nothing works?
Old packages shadow new ones; Boards Manager keeps versions side by side. Remove the old entry, restart, reinstall. One board package per chip family is the rule.
Can I install the ESP32 boards without internet?
Yes, with effort: the manual JSON-plus-zip install Espressif documents, or copy the entire Arduino15 folder from a machine where it works. Copying the folder is what I actually do on air-gapped machines — it is crude and it works.
Still stuck? Run the code anyway.
While the toolchain fights you, the same sketch runs in a browser simulator — app.sensbench.com models the WROOM-32D, so validate the code now and flash it when the IDE cooperates. The getting-started FAQ ties board selection and first upload together end to end.
The Board Manager Step You Can Skip
“ESP32 missing from the boards list” is an index-and-version problem that vanishes in a browser: every example is already paired with its virtual board — classic, C3, S3, Pico, STM32, even an ESP32-CAM. No JSON URLs, no cores downloading, no version dance. When you do install locally, this FAQ’s fixes apply — but you will be flashing code that already ran somewhere.
