ESP32 RF: GPS, NFC, LoRa, Zigbee

How to connect gps module to esp32, how to use lora module with esp32, and whether the chip can do NFC or Zigbee at all — the radio questions, sorted by what the hardware actually supports.

How to Connect GPS Module to ESP32?

Wire the module's TX to a UART RX pin — on a WROOM dev board, GPIO 16/17 (UART2) is the classic pair — feed it 3.3 V, and you get NMEA sentences at 9600 baud by default. TinyGPS++ parses the $GPGGA lines into lat/lon. Use UART2, not the monitor's UART0, or GPS chatter and debug output fight for one port. Pinout notes: the knowledge base.

How to Make a GPS Tracker with ESP32?

Combine a GPS module with BLE or cellular for transmission — Wi-Fi tracking only works where you are already connected. The standard build: GPS plus an A7670/SIM7600 or a phone relay over BLE, deep sleep between fixes, and MQTT publishing. Current draw decides battery life: GPS ~50 mA while acquiring, Wi-Fi transmit spikes near 300 mA. The power guide has the numbers.

How to Use LoRa Module with ESP32?

An SX1278 or RA-02 on SPI is the standard pairing — four signal wires plus power, and the RadioLib or LoRa library gets you packet radios in an evening. Heltec and LilyGO boards integrate the LoRa chip, so no wiring at all. Range is a kilometre or two in built-up areas, tens of kilometres line of sight, depending on spreading factor. On my Heltec WiFi LoRa 32, SF12 with a decent antenna reached ~2 km across town; SF7 was dead at 300 m. Ready-made LoRa examples and prebuilt kits.

Does ESP32 Have Built-in LoRa?

No — the ESP32's own radio is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth only, so LoRa always comes from an external chip like the SX1276/SX1262 family over SPI. "ESP32 LoRa board" almost always means an ESP32 plus a separate LoRa radio on the same PCB.

Can ESP32 Do NFC?

Not out of the box — there is no NFC hardware on any ESP32, so you add a PN532 (I2C/SPI) or RC522 (SPI) reader. With the MFRC522 library, reading tags, writing NDEF records, and acting as an NFC target all work. Keep the reader's antenna away from the Wi-Fi antenna.

Does ESP32 Support Zigbee?

The original ESP32 does not, but the ESP32-C6 and ESP32-H2 have native 802.15.4 radios, which means Thread and Zigbee support built in. ESP-IDF ships the Zigbee stack for those chips, and you can join an existing Zigbee network as an end device.

What GPS Accuracy Can the ESP32 Achieve?

With a clear view, a NEO-6M-class module reports ~2.5 m accuracy, and SBAS/WAAS-enabled modules push closer to 2 m. Indoors or next to buildings, accuracy collapses — GPS needs sky. Sub-meter work needs RTK modules, which cost more than the ESP32 itself.

LoRa or Wi-Fi for a Project?

If your device is battery-powered and needs kilometre range at low data rates, LoRa; if you need throughput or you are already on Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi. LoRa's bitrate tops out around 11 kbps — text, sensor readings, commands. Most LoRa projects are sensors; most Wi-Fi projects are interactive.

Can the ESP32 Use Wi-Fi, BLE, and LoRa at Once?

Wi-Fi and BLE share the same 2.4 GHz radio and time-slice it — both work, neither at full duty cycle. An external LoRa chip on SPI runs completely independently, and GPS on UART doesn't touch the radio at all, so all four coexist. FreeRTOS handles the scheduling.

What Radios Are in the ESP32 Family?

Original ESP32, S2, S3: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 4 plus Bluetooth (4.2 on the original, 5.0 on the S3). C3: Wi-Fi and BLE 5.0 on RISC-V. C6 and H2: add 802.15.4 for Zigbee and Thread. C5: dual-band 2.4/5 GHz. If you need a specific band, the chip choice matters more than anything you can add later.
